Before you start

  • Read through the recipe before blending. Peel and chop the mango and keep the dairy cold.

Directions

1

Read and gather

For the whole recipe

Read through the recipe and gather the equipment. Use the ingredient lines to prepare and measure everything, keeping the yogurt and milk cold. Everything is measured and cold.

2

Blend until smooth

For each batch

Blend the mango, yogurt, milk, 4 tsp honey and ground cardamom to taste, if using, until completely smooth with no mango fibers.

3

Taste the drink

For each batch

Taste the drink. Aim for sweet ripe mango with a gentle yogurt tang. If it tastes tart or flat, blend in honey to taste. The drink tastes sweet and tangy.

4

Blend in ice and serve

For the whole recipe

Blend in ice to taste for a colder, thicker drink, if using, or pour the drink over ice. Divide between the glasses as 2 servings and serve cold, refrigerating any drink saved for later. The drink is cold and smooth.

About this recipe

Research preview: these details come from our sourced research and haven't been reviewed by our chef yet.

Why it works

Very ripe mango gives sweetness and body, yogurt adds tang and thickness, and a little milk thins it to a drinkable texture; sweeten only after tasting, because mangoes vary.

Associated with

Punjabi and wider South Asian

Lassi is a blended yogurt drink from Punjab, traditionally made with buffalo-milk yogurt and served in a clay cup; adding mango makes mango lassi, now popular worldwide.

Serving and keeping

Best served: Freshly blended and cold In two glasses, over ice if you like

Make ahead: Keep it up to about a day in the refrigerator; stir before serving.

Storage: Keep it refrigerated and out of the fridge no more than 2 hours (1 hour above 90 °F / 32 °C). The one-day time is the recipe source's keeping note, not a federal storage time.

Leftovers: Stir or re-blend before drinking; it thickens as it stands.

Food safety

  • Keep the yogurt, milk and finished drink refrigerated; do not leave the drink out more than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90 °F (32 °C).
  • Rinse fresh mango under running water before peeling and cutting.
  • If you sweeten with honey, do not give the drink to babies under 1 year old.

We make no statement about cross-contact in your kitchen or in packaged ingredients. Check the yogurt label.

Nutrition notes

The honey or sugar is the only added sugar; ripe mango is sweet enough to halve it or leave it out.

The yogurt and milk supply protein and calcium.

We don't show nutrition claims (like “good source of”) until our legal review is done.
