Batching
Blend in batches if your blender jar is small; each batch blends the same way and needs no extra time.
Original recipe: 8 servings.
Ice is added to taste and left out of the nutrition scenario; sugar is counted at the smaller amount of its range. Nutrition is incomplete because the share of the pressed lime and mint that ends up in each drink is not established.
Before you start
- Read through the recipe before you start. Gather the blender, tall glasses, a muddler or wooden spoon and the measured ingredients.
Directions
Read and gather
For the whole recipe
Read through the recipe and gather the equipment. Use the ingredient lines to prepare and measure everything, chilling the watermelon if you have time. Everything is measured and the glasses are ready.
Blend the watermelon
For each blender batch
Blend about 4 cups seedless watermelon with about 1/2 cup cold water in the blender until the mixture is completely smooth.
Stir in the sugar and taste
For each blender batch
Stir in about 1/4–1/2 cups granulated sugar a little at a time. Taste as you add the sugar. Aim for fresh and lightly sweet, with the watermelon flavor in front. Stop adding sugar as soon as it tastes sweet enough. The drink tastes lightly sweet.
Cut the lime and press it with the mint in the glasses
For each blender batch
Cut each lime slice in half. Put a half slice and 3 mint leaves in each glass and press them gently with the muddler to release their juice and aroma. Fill each glass with ice to taste. Each glass holds pressed lime and mint under ice.
Pour and serve
For the whole recipe
Pour the watermelon mixture over the ice to make 8 servings, and stir each glass before serving. Keep any unserved mixture in the refrigerator. The drinks are poured and stirred.
About this recipe

Why it works
Blending ripe watermelon with a little cold water makes a smooth, thin drink; adding the sugar a little at a time keeps the fruit in front, and pressing lime and mint in each glass adds aroma without bitterness.
Associated with
Mexican agua fresca tradition
Fruit and flower waters are an old Mexican tradition; sugar became the usual sweetener after the 16th century.

Nutrition notes
The granulated sugar is the added sugar, and it is to taste; ripe watermelon is already sweet, so you can use less or none.
